ANALYSIS
Chidi Njokuani is a naturally gifted athlete known for his speed and power. Similar in style to his older brother Anthony, Chidi is a muay thai striker who turned to professional MMA at the age of eighteen. The talented welterweight holds immense potential given his raw tools, and with complimentary progression in his technique he’s capable of developing into an impact fighter at some point.
An exceptional striker, Njokuani’s blazing speed and quickness is very evident in his standup. He’s been blessed with the foot speed and instincts to get in and out of range rapidly, opening up a multitude of opportunities for his striking. Showcasing outstanding fluidity to his movement, Njokuani is able to maneuver himself with little wasted motion. His size is a positive attribute and his reach lends considerably to his outside striking game. This is especially prevalent in his kicking, as Njokuani’s shown the capacity to fire kicks off in rapid succession with equal success to the legs, body, and head of opponents. Not limited to a particular technique, Njokuani attacks with a variety of front, roundhouse and leg kicks. His striking repertoire also features fast hands, knockout power and a dangerous thai clinch. Defensively, while his instincts are not as polished as his offensive abilities, they do suffice. Njokuani’s overall combination of speed, size and power is undeniable and he does hold elite offensive potential as an MMA striker.
Njokuani’s physical strength shows through in his ability to drive through opponents to complete powerful takedowns. Posturing up he can work a strong ground and pound attack showing potential in his top position skills, but his ground game does have its concerns. In stark contrast to his striking, Njokuani is very much out of his element on the mat. He’s not comfortable working off his back and his technical skills are rudimentary. Opponents do recognize the holes in his game, and for that reason Njokuani remains quite vulnerable against good wrestlers and top position grapplers. Stylistically speaking, defensive wrestling with the appropriate complimentary BJJ skills will be keys to his development. Njokuani has taken steps in the right direction by taking his BJJ training to legendary instructor Sergio Penha.
