ANALYSIS
Based out of the Grudge Training Center, Chaun Sims is an exciting middleweight prospect who holds well rounded potential as an MMA fighter. Well spoken, intelligent and talented, Sims is widely recognised as one of the top up and coming middleweights based out of Colorado.

Sims comes from a strong grappling background. Although his base is wrestling, Sims’ biggest weapon on the mat is his BJJ game. He currently trains and coaches jiu jitsu at Easton BJJ, and comes to MMA with solid credentials in the discipline. As a purple belt, Sims is a two-time BJJ No-Gi World Champion having captured titles in both the Heavyweight and Openweight divisions in 2008. He also won a Pan- American Championship in 2007 as a blue belt, and overall holds exciting potential in his grappling abilities. A solid athlete, Sims has demonstrated the ability to take opponents down with powerful takedowns early in his career. He’s armed with impressive natural strength and a good double leg to get the fight to the mat. Sims utilizes an efficient ground and pound game on the mat, although he is capable of posturing up to land much harder punches when the opportunities present themself. As an accomplished BJJ grappler, Sims is intelligent in using his striking to open up grappling opportunities on the mat, and technically proficient in his ground skills to take advantage of those opportunities. Sims’ strong No-Gi grappling pedigree is very evident on the mat where he possesses an excellent top game. There, he displays very nice top control, quick transitions and the ability to remain active without getting reckless. Sims shows strong guard passing and is very adept at taking his opponents back. He uses his legs very nicely in keeping control of his opposition and is impressive in improving, or at least maintaining position. Well versed in submissions, Sims is already armed with a smooth, fluid ground game and overall holds fantastic long-term potential as an MMA grappler.

Sims trains his standup at the Grudge Training Center under the watchful eyes of respected MMA coaches Trevor Wittman and Brian Young. He takes a technical approach to his striking as he looks to utilize his reach and jab-cross combination while showing the defensive awareness to keep his hands up and protect his head. Sims is far from one dimensional in his potential and will aggressively push forward and engage on the feet. He throws a good lead left hook, and sprinkles in an effective array of leg kicks which he uses to set up his straight right. From close quarters Sims shows the wherewithal to latch on to the thai plum where he can fire off quick knees to the body. He has made a serious effort to be as well rounded as possible, and his striking is developing at a steady rate. Although he will need to tighten up his defense and continue focusing on his technique, Sims has shown promise in his standup and potential as a well rounded fighter.
OUTLOOK
Chaun Sims has taken an intelligent approach to his training and appears very committed to his MMA career. He’s working diligently on all facets of his game (grappling, striking, strength and conditioning) and surrounded himself with a world class group of coaches and training partners. Sims has definite top ten potential at middleweight.
