ANALYSIS
Chase Gormley entered the sport of mixed martial arts with bases in wrestling, boxing and jiu iitsu - an excellent combination that is very rarely found in fighters prior to their mixed martial arts careers. Well travelled in his training, Gormley currently trains out of the famed Blackhouse gym and also spent time previously training alongside Antonio McKee, Jason High and Brett Cooper at the Bodyshop Fitness Team. After a very early introduction to the disciplines of boxing, BJJ and wrestling, Gormley eventually made his debut at the age of 23 and has gone on to win his six of his first seven bouts includies victories over veterans Jon Murphy and Eric Pele.
After a solid high school wrestling career, Gormley went on to wrestle at the collegiate level where he enjoyed decent success, eventually earning NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) All-American Wrestler status during his time at Lindenwood University. Gormley also began training in BJJ at the age of thirteen, and his overall grappling game is a nice blend of his BJJ and wrestling backgrounds. He's shown that he does have the ability to take the fight to the ground consistently as he showed in his bout with Erik Pele, and will look to posture up and deliver good elbows, punches and ground and pound. Composed all-around, Gormley will also look for submission opportunities when they arise (see bout with Stefan Struve) showing well rounded grappling potential. However, while his overall grappling game is coming along nicely, Gormley is a competent but not elite wrestler who will need to continue working on improving his guard skills. Gormley has looked much better operating from top position but he can, and has been put on his back where he has not looked nearly as effective. Before submitting Gormley with a triangle choke, Stefan Struve was able to take Gormley down and easily pass his guard and mount him, all the while feeding Gormley a steady diet of punches from top position. However, training with the likes of the Nogueira brothers and Anderson Silva at the Blackhouse Gym, Gormley is in excellent position to continue developing his overall ground game.
Given that he's trained so long in jiu jitsu and wrestling, it's amazing to think that Gormley has also been studying boxing since the age of four. Both his father and his older brother were former pro boxers and Gormley followed their footsteps into the sport although he's never competed as a professional (he does have aspirations to at some point though). He's also served as a sparring partner to professional heavyweights Chris Arreola and Lance Whitaker - a testament to his boxing skills, and overall possesses a solid chin (see bout with Jon Murphy), good hands and a composed, competitive striking game.

OUTLOOK
Chase Gormley displays tremendous composure in his all-around game, but will need to work hard at continuing to refine his skills and putting his MMA game together. Gormley has a solid wrestling background which is layered with solid skills in BJJ and boxing, and given the length of time he's spent in the various areas of the sport displays excellent potential in developing into a very well rounded fighter. Not an overly athletic fighter, Gormley's future in the division may come down to how technically proficient he can get his game, but with continued development Gormley has top twenty potential at heavyweight.
