ANALYSIS
After starting his mixed martial career with three losses in his first four professional fights, Brett Cooper would bounce back by winning eight of his next nine, including TKO stoppages of UFC veterans Jason Von Flue and Rory Markham to establish himself as a prospect to be watched in the welterweight division. Training out of the Bodyshop Fitness Team under IFL vet Antonio McKee, Cooper is an aggressive striker known for his resiliency and his improving standup abilities. Cooper has a tremendous heart and is very hard to put away as he proved in his bout with Markham; coming back after being hurt numerous times on his feet and caught in a deep triangle choke to score the knockout win.
Cooper definitely prefers to keep the fight standing where he's shown steadily improving boxing skills, quick leg kicks and a solid chin. Light, quick and agile on his feet, Cooper is an effective counter-puncher who displays solid footwork, and has proven he's not afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone (see bouts with Markham and Speight).Although he is an aggressive striker, Cooper does prefer to feel out his opponents on the feet before deciding on a specific course of action. As he gets comfortable and starts finding his range he will press forward and slowly stalk his opponents around the ring, and with his excellent cardio is able to press the action very well. Cooper's rapidly improving technical boxing game consists of fast hands, a quick stiff jab, and an excellent right upper cut (see bout with Sergio Moraes), and he also possesses heavy hands and considerable knockout power. As opposed to most strikers who will lead with their jab, Cooper will lead right in with his uppercut and it has been directly responsible for his splendid TKO victories over Patrick Speight, Sergio Moraes, and UFC veterans Jason Von Flue and Rory Markham. A quick striker all-around, Cooper also shows a developing clinch game with good knees from in close. For the most part Cooper does good defensively in keeping his hands up on his feet, but at times will drop them when he throws punches and will also need to improve his head movement as has been hurt in the past standing (he was hurt my Markham numerous times and knocked out by Spirit Wolf; see below). Because of his striking style, Cooper has, will and is definitely not afraid to get hit, but his pressing style has led to him getting anxious and sloppy in the past, costing him matches in the process. Cooper definitely prefers to keep the fight standing, but training under Antonio McKee has displayed good takedown defense while also proving to be a competent wrestler who possesses the ability to take the fight to the ground when it suits him (see bout with Markham). From top position he's shown an active ground and pound game, but his overall grappling and jiu jitsu skills are still developing, and he will need to continue working on shoring up his submission and BJJ games. Cooper keeps his cool at all times and is not one to easily get rattled or put off his game. Cooper was taken down, mounted, and caught in a deep armbar attempt in his bout with Sergio Moraes but kept his composure and escaped without taking any damage. However, that bout also showed that Cooper will need to continue working on his technical ground skills in order to take his game to the next level.

OUTLOOK
Brett Cooper is a very committed fighter who has shown steady progress through his early MMA career. He's not afraid of being put in any position and although his overall game still lacks polish, he display well rounded skills with plenty of room and time for improvement. Cooper's punching power is legitimate, his technical striking skills are coming around and he shows competent wrestling skills. Cooper's not ready for the "big time" just yet, but at the very least he has top fifteen potential as a welterweight.
