ANALYSIS
A finalist on the 10th season of the Ultimate Fighter, Brendan Schaub is a big (6'4"), athletic heavyweight prospect currently competing for the UFC. Schaub is a former professional football player who enters the sport with a good set of natural tools, excellent cardio, and considerable raw power. Training under the watchful eye of Greg Jackson, Schaub has the advantage of fighting out of one of top MMA camps in the world in addition to having one of the most cerebral coaches in the game on his side.
Early in his career, Schaub has quickly earned a reputation for his heavy hands and aggressive standup abilities. Schaub gets right at his opponents looking to engage quickly, and definitely tries his best to finish fights. More of a boxer on his feet, Schaub's striking game consists mainly of a quick, probing jab and a powerful right hand. He does possess considerable knockout power, and has finished the vast majority of his opponents (including two non official fights while filming "The Ultimate Fighter") by knockout very early into his fights. Schaub's athletic abilities and natural power bode well for his continued development as a striker, although he will need to harness his aggressive nature and learn to be a little more selective on his feet as he does have the tendency to leave himself open to counters.
Not surprising given his heavy handedness, Schaub has shown he is able to deliver a powerful ground and pound attack from top position as was the case in his fights against Alex Rozman, Jay Lester and his TUF bout with Marcus Jones. His submission game also seems to be developing nicely and he will actively look for submission opportunities when those chances present themselves. Recognizing that he's most dangerous on his feet, Schaub does try his best to keep the fight standing and has made strides towards improving his takedown defense. In spite of that, Schaub will need to continue working on his ground game and sprawl as he has been put on his back numerous times early in his career. During his TUF stint he was taken down in each of his four fights (against Demico Rogers, Jon Madsen, Marcus Jones and Roy Nelson) where he found himself put in precarious positions while fighting off his back, and he was also taken down in his bout with Johnny Curtis. Schaub will need to continue working on his takedown defense and technical ground skills, but training with Greg Jackson you can be assured he will be taking all the necessary steps towards refining his wrestling and overall competency on the ground in order to round out his game as best as possible.

OUTLOOK
Very early into his MMA career, Brendan Schaub has proven he's definitely talented. His natural athletic abilities, size, heavy hands, camp, training partners, and hardworking nature are all promising indicators of a fulfilling career in mixed martial arts. The "x" factor in the big equation is Schaub's ground game. If his early career is any indication, then strong grapplers will be able to put him on his back and he will need to continue working on his takedown defense and jiu jitsu game. Schaub has top ten talent in the division.
