A highly motivated lightweight prospect, Benson Henderson is an up and coming fighter currently training out of the MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona. Henderson is extremely hard working and dedicated to his craft and his positive attitude and honest approach to his training are second to none, and will only serve to help him as his career moves forward. Although he doesn't have as highly decorated a wrestling pedigree as some in the sport, Henderson was a two time NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) All-American wrestler at Dana College, and did enter the sport with decent wrestling base. A quick, athletic and deceptively strong fighter, Henderson has shown he has the ability to take the fight to the ground with good takedowns, a quick double leg and, at times, big slams. Henderson will need to continue working on his takedown defense but has proven his self to be very difficult at holding down when he does end up on the ground, as displayed in his bout with former three-time NCAA All-American Wrestler, Shane Roller. Overall, although Henderson wouldn't be considered an elite mixed martial arts wrestler he has proven to be a competent in the area and at twenty six years of age leaves room for further improvement. Once on the ground Henderson displays a tenacious, active ground and pound game where he has a tendency to load up with big strikes and often times will stand in his opponents guard looking to land that big fight ending punch or elbow. Henderson also holds a BJJ purple belt under Royce Gracie certified instructor John Crouch, and possesses a smooth, technical grappling game as well as a sound understanding of submissions - with the majority of his wins (six of eight) coming that route. Henderson is very difficult to finish on the ground and is a very composed fighter who calmly works himself free from difficult situations as he showed in his bout with Donald Cerrone.

On his feet, Henderson has displayed steadily improving technical striking skills which upon his initial arrival in the sport were quite green despite a background in taekwondo. Henderson is very light and quick on his feet and features a striking game that consists of fast hands, an excellent straight left as well as an effective arsenal of leg and body kicks, in addition to possessing knockout power. Henderson likes to push the pace and prides himself on finishing fights, but that same aggressive approach has led to his getting wild at times. Although he has been hurt on his feet in the past, Henderson displays tremendous resiliency and quick recovery abilities as showcased in his fights with Shane Roller and Ricardo Tirlone, when he was able to come back and win in decisive fashion after being hurt early in both fights. The higher end of the welterweight division is dominated by exceptional wrestlers with stronger pedigrees then Henderson, if he is going to challenge those fighters then he must continue working on his standup and making his game as well rounded as possible.
