ANALYSIS
Training out of the highly acclaimed American Top Team camp, Ben Saunders is a former "Ultimate Fighter 6" contestant who has quickly been earning a reputation in the UFC for his exciting style of fighting. When he's on his game Saunders is an aggressive, hardnosed welterweight who looks to finish and shows no fear during his bouts.

At 6'3", Saunders is a tall welterweight whose long reach and dangerous clinch game present a very unique set of skills and make him a threat from both in close and at long range. From the outside Saunders possesses a good straight left and decent hands overall, but is best known for his repertoire of kicks. Saunders displays a wide arsenal of kicks (powerful leg kicks, head kicks and body kicks that he mixes up well, and with his long legs Saunders is able to pepper his opponents from outside their range and keep them at bay. Due to his size, reach and abilities, opponents often need to get inside his range to effectively strike with him. Once there however, Saunders has proven to be just as, if not more dangerous than he is from the outside as he immediately looks to lock his opponents in his strong thai clinch. Once there Saunders exhibits a vicious clinch game that features lightening quick knees to both the head and body of his opponents. His bouts with Brandon Wolff and Marcus Davis were prime examples of how dangerous he can be in the clinch, as he exploded on Wolff with a brutal barrage of knees dismantling him less then two minutes into the opening round, and also disposed of Davis in brutal fashion with powerful knees from in close. Although he has impressed with his striking, Saunders must be careful that he does not become too predictable. In his bout with Mike Swick, Saunders' striking looked slightly telegraphed and Swick had no problem dealing with the difficulties that his previous opponents had encountered. Also, although Saunders is a big, tall welterweight he is not the quickest fighter in the division. His bout with Swick highlighted that point as he had a lot of trouble dealing with the speed and quickness that Swick presented, and was eventually TKO'd in the second round. While Saunders has impressed with his striking, he must continue working on his overall abilities to ensure his continued growth as a fighter.

With an MMA game that flows very well, Saunders transitions excellently from striking to grappling. A BJJ brown belt, Saunders is a knowledgeable submissions fighter who attempts to take immediate advantage of submission opportunities when they arise, and in whatever position they may present themselves. With his long limbs and flexibility, Saunders has an excellent defensive guard but at the same time also actively searches for subs and transitions - and is particularly good at taking his opponents back. Over the course of his career Saunders has continued to work on his wrestling skills and has displayed a steadily improving takedown defense especially since his "TUF" loss against Tommy Speers , and training at one of the top MMA camps in the world in American Top Team there's no reason that trend shouldn't continue. Although Saunders is a very competent on the ground, the elite ranks of the welterweight division are dominated by top level grapplers and to that end Saunders will need to continue improving his overall grappling ability.
OUTLOOK
Ben Saunders has a great fighting attitude, trains out of an excellent camp and has looked extremely impressive early in his career. His combination of size, grappling prowess and dangerous standup abilities present a unique challenge to his opponents and intriguing potential overall. Saunders is a very talented welterweight who has shown steady progress throughout his career, and if he continues on that same path he has definite top ten potential as a welterweight.
