Andy Main is an AMA Fight Club and Renzo Gracie trained product who competed on the twelfth season of the “Ultimate Fighter”. Although he fought for Team Koscheck on the show, Main had close ties with Team St. Pierre and in particular John Danaher. Like many East Coast fighters, Main made his way through New Jersey based promotion Ring of Combat before earning a shot on “TUF”.

Main’s biggest strength is his intelligence and it’s shown in his progression as a BJJ player. At the age of twenty one Main already held a purple belt under Renzo Gracie, and appears well on his way towards achieving a legitimate black belt before his thirtieth birthday. To compliment his ground game, Main has shown potential in his takedowns including a quick entry shot, and nice transitions between singles and doubles. Though Main will need to tidy up his wrestling, his aggressiveness in pursuit of takedowns is certainly admirable. Quick on the ground, Main shows smooth transitions and submission attempts. He’s very aggressive on the mat and constantly looking to improve his position or finish. Although Main is still green off his back, he does show the same attentiveness in looking for sweeps and opportunities that he does from top position. Main will need to tighten up his guard and technical ability, but his future appears bright as an MMA grappler.

Main throws out a probing jab and is blessed with good reach. Standing southpaw he looks to land a quick lead hook and a straight left down the middle. Although striking is not his forte, Main has demonstrated knockout power in his punching. Technically he is still developing and often times will leave himself vulnerable to strikes down the middle. Main’s punches get a little loopy, and he tends to wade in with his chin exposed. At times he’ll appear stiff on his feet and should pay attention to his footwork, movement and defense as he progresses in his career.
