One of the top European prospects in the game today, Alexander Gustafsson is an immensely talented light heavyweight prospect currently under contract to the UFC. Known for his standup and ground and pound abilities, Gustafsson is a dangerous fighter who has earned his nickname "The Mauler". At 6'5" tall, Gustafsson is incredibly tall for a light heavyweight and makes effective use of his reach with a powerful right cross (see bout with Hamman) and strong leg kicks. He's a very aggressive fighter who likes to set the pace of the fight and methodically stalks his opponents down with an unrelenting attack. Gustafsson's has very heavy hands, is not afraid to engage, is willing to stand and trade and given his reach advantage and punching power has been very effective standing in his short career. Gustafsson's power was on full display when he took on Jared Hamman in his UFC debut, as he knocked Hamman out with a brutal straight right followed by a series of heavy hammer fists on the ground. Although he will need to work on tightening up his technical striking, head movement and defensive skills, Gustafsson's standup game has been progressing incredibly well and given his age and experience he holds exciting potential as an MMA striker. Gustafsson is physically strong, has tremendous balance and a good sprawl which helps him to keep his fights standing. Gustafsson has been incredibly difficult to put on his back early in his career, and because of that his guard game is almost completely untested. Gustafsson displays strong wrestling abilities and has shown the ability to take the fight to the ground with good takedowns, particularly in the clinch. Going forward it will be interesting to see how those takedowns match up with the better wrestlers in the division, and much of his future prospects will depend on that. On the ground Gustafsson has displayed excellent top control, good submissions defense and an unrelenting ground and pound attack. Gustafsson is viscous on the ground with his striking as his long limbs help him rain in heavy punches and effective hammer fists from the top, side and even back control. Gustafsson is tenacious on the ground, and gives his opponents little room to breathe or manoeuvre when he lets his fist go on the ground. Gustafsson has shown poise and patience both on his feet and on the ground, and is a technical fighter who is light years ahead of most at his age who have to learn to pick their spots. At the same time he has not lost his killer instinct and is a finisher who has won the vast majority of his fights via KO/TKO (seven of his first nine).
