Prospect Grades Explained

Eligibility:
1. Age Requirement:
Only those fighters under the age of 30 may be considered prospects.

2. Experience Requirement:
Only those fighters with under 25 professional fights may be considered prospects.

The line between what constitutes an amateur and a professional fight is a very blurry one - especially in countries with no sanctioning or regulation. To compensate for this we allow a generous figure of up to 25 fights for prospect consideration.

3. Prospect Formula:
Only those fighters that meet the following requirement will be considered prospects:

The sum of:
5.5 x Prospect's UFC fights
4 x Prospect's Strikeforce/Sengoku/DREAM/WEC fights
3 x Prospect's Bellator fights
2 x Prospect's all other fights
2.4 x (Prospect Age - 20)

Must be LESS THAN OR EQUAL to 60

For fighters who are within 2 points of 60, mmaranked.com reserves the right to make a judgement call although in almost all cases we will not go against it.

4. Rank Requirement:
Any fighters that are, or have been considered top ten contenders cannot be considered prospects.

Grades:
Each fighter’s Prospect Grade is made up of two components; both a numerical and an alphabetical grade.

The numerical value represents the top end potential of the prospect in question. It is a value of the full potential a fighter holds. This number does not take into account the probability or likelihood of that fighter reaching that potential and is only meant to illustrate the “full” promise a fighter holds. Numerical values will range between 50 –100.

The alphabetical value represents how close a given fighter is to reaching his top end potential (numerical value). This value is meant to indicate how close a fighter is to fulfilling his top end promise. The higher the value, the closer he is to reaching his potential. Alphabetical values will range from A – E.

These numerical and alphabetical values combine to give the overall Prospect Grade for each fighter in question. What weight is given to each value (numerical or alphabetical) in determining the “quality” of the prospect will differ from person to person.
Examples:
A fighter with a 100A rating has the highest top end potential one could theoretically receive as well as being very close to realizing that potential.

A fighter with 50E rating has the lowest top end potential one could theoretically receive while also being very far from realizing that potential.
