Since turning pro in late 2008, Phil Davis has quickly risen through the prospect ranks and firmly established himself as one of the sport's most promising fighters. An elite level collegiate wrestler, Davis entered the sport after a stellar career at Penn State where he was a four-time Division I All-American and 2008 National Champion. He's continued working diligently on rounding out his ground game since, capturing a No-Gi BJJ World Championship in 2009 in the blue belt division. In his first two fights in the UFC, Davis has dominated former WEC Light Heavyweight Champ Brian Stann and submitted Swedish prospect Alexander Gustafsson with a beautiful anaconda choke. Although he'll need to continue focusing on his standup, Davis is a terrific athlete with tremendous fight instincts and he has a chance to develop into a very special fighter for years to come.

Rory MacDonald is a “new breed” welterweight whose road to mixed martial arts didn't come as a result of his strength or credentials in any single discipline. Instead the twenty one year old BC product dove headfirst into his MMA training, and his overall progression has been nothing short of excellent. MacDonald shows tremendous versatility in his game with strong wrestling, slick submission skills and dangerous standup abilities. He's also proven to be a remarkably intelligent and grounded fighter, evidenced by his post fight interview at UFC 115 when he suffered the first loss of his career to Carlos Condit. MacDonald is a superbly talented, committed, and mentally strong athlete who should develop into an impact top ten welterweight within 1-2 years.

Ben Askren was an outstanding amateur wrestler prior to pursuing a career in mixed martial arts. While attending the University of Missouri, Askren would capture the Dan Hodge Trophy twice (only the second wrestler to ever do so), earn NCAA Division I All-American honours four times and win two National Championships (he was also a two-time runner up) amongst countless other titles and accomplishments. He'd go on to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games before joining one of the top camps in the sport, American Top Team. There he's worked very diligently on rounding out his grappling arsenal and currently holds a purple belt in BJJ. In 2010, Askren easily won Bellator FC's season two Welterweight Grand Prix by defeating three opponents, including Dan Hornbuckle. His striking will definitely need work and his guard play is untested, but Askren is committed to the sport and appears well on his way to a prosperous career in the welterweight division.

Roger Gracie is easily the most decorated Jiu Jitsu player in MMA today. Amongst his many accomplishments, Gracie is an incredible fourteen-time Jiu Jitsu World Champion and three-time ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion. His pure jiu jitsu game is the very best on the planet and there are few, if any heavyweights in the world that could last with him on the mat. Gracie's also shown improving striking ability, most recently against Kevin Randleman during his May 2010 Strikeforce debut. If Gracie fully committed himself to his MMA training, he's the kind of the talent that could find himself a permanent top ten fixture within a year or two. The problem is that Gracie is very committed to his grappling career and has fought very sporadically (three fights) over the last four and a half years. Simeon Thoresen is the top Norwegian prospect in MMA. An agile welterweight with a good grappling game and slick submissions, Thoresen will need to concentrate on his wrestling if his ultimate goal is to make his mark in North America. For now, Thoresen appears content with biding his time overseas where he has been tearing through the British circuit. A Joachim Hansen protégé, Thoresen is an agile welterweight whose finesse style of fighting definitely gives a European feel to his game. If he keeps going the way he has, it's inevitable that Thoresen will eventually make his way across the Atlantic to try and crack to the upper echelons of the welterweight division.

Like fellow Armenian Gegard Mousasi, Georgi Karakhanyan is an offensively gifted fighter who always looks to finish. He's a strong grappler who combines a good submissions game with explosive striking potential on his feet. A participant in Bellator's second featherweight tournament, Karakhanyan showed glimpses of his star potential with his tremendous knockout win over Bao Quach. That tournament also highlighted the weaknesses in Karakhanyan's game, as his inexperience in the wrestling department cost him his semi-final matchup against Joe Warren. The tournament overall was a good learning experience for Karakhanayan, whose offensive instincts and exciting style have him poised as a potential breakout candidate for 2011.

Mairbek Taisumov's stock is rapidly on the rise. The M-1 prospect has already reeled off four straight win this year, showing well rounded abilities in the process. Taisumov possesses a quality submission game, excellent ground and pound abilities, and shows outstanding potential in his striking. He does have a freestyle wrestling background, and despite showing a good sprawl as well as a competent overall wrestling game, he is far from tested against top competition. Still twenty one, if his wrestling abilities continue progressing to the point where he can match up with his North American counterparts, his success in the division is almost inevitable. For now, Taisumov appears content in gaining experience and making his mark fighting in Europe.

Heavyweight Chad Corvin is ready to take to the main stage after signing with the UFC in early 2010. Although he comes from a wrestling background, Corvin appears to have found his comfort zone on the feet where he's shown tremendous raw punching power. At 6'5” tall, he's a physically imposing heavyweight who hasn't let even one of his six pro fights make into the second minute. Given his size, knockout power, and ability to finish, the stylistic similarities between he and Shane Carwin are obvious. Also similar is that aside from his wrestling background and power, much of his game is completely untested. Corvin hasn't fought since early 2009 and is still extremely raw, but he is a potential top ten fighter down the road.

Paul Sass is part of the growing number of talented English fighters to join the UFC in recent years. Just twenty one years of age, Sass solidified his spot as one of the top lightweights in Britain by earning ten straight victories to start his career. For his age, his grappling instincts are off the charts with nine of his ten wins coming via submission. He's proven especially dangerous off his back where his long, lanky frame has aided in his securing eight of those wins by triangle choke. Like most young fighters, rounding out his game and filling out physically will be keys at the next level. He's still raw, but the UFC will likely be patient with his development so Sass should get plenty of time to develop his game.

Hans Stringer continues progressing at a very steady rate. In stark contrast to most Dutch fighters, Stringer's known for his strong grappling and developing standup game. The multiple time Dutch BJJ Champion shows sound fight instincts, and appears 100% committed to his fighting career. At twenty two year of age, Stringer has really started to come on in the last couple of years and is currently in the midst of a seven fight win streak. Although he has been in contact with several major promotions, Stringer does have issues in his game that need to be addressed. His wrestling and takedown defense are still subpar, and will be major areas of focus as he moves forward in his career. Expect to see Stringer pushing for a spot in a major promotion at some point in 2011.

The versatile Belgian is often overshadowed by the young welterweights of the UFC, but Tarec Saffiedine is a talented fighter and rising star for Strikeforce. The Team Quest product possesses a quality striking game, good submissions skills and quickly maturing wrestling abilities. He's young, tough and shows an exceptional work ethic for an athlete his age. Saffiedine's also responsible defensively, and he projects as a very well rounded fighter in a division that demands it. He continues developing at a steady rate, and should prove to be a very reliable welterweight fighter over the course of his career.

An extremely skilled BJJ practitioner and power grappler, Wilson Reis is just one of many high calibre prospects to compete for Bellator FC. He's a former BJJ World Champion who possesses a strong, technical understanding of the ground game and dangerous submission abilities. Reis has competed in the first two Bellator featherweight tourneys, coming up short both times when matched against more versatile fighters. Although his striking does show potential, Reis' is still green and has work to do technically. Still only twenty five years of age, Reis is already a very mature grappler who with continued focus on his standup has a chance to make an impact in the featherweight division.

Powerhouse Shigeki Osawa is just one of many promising featherweights on the Asian MMA circuit. Of the group, Osawa's combination of brute strength, athleticism and strong wrestling pedigree make him particularly intriguing going forward. A 2012 Olympic hopeful, Osawa's a former All-Japan Freestyle Wrestling and World University Wrestling Champion. Although his overall game is very raw, Osawa's strength and takedowns have transitioned seamlessly to mixed martial arts competition. He appears to have found a home with Sengoku, so in the immediate future look for Osawa to continue developing his game while competing in Japan.

A dynamic athlete and versatile grappler, Misha Cirkunov is a superbly gifted fighter currently training out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He enters the sport with a tremendous grappling pedigree, as his decorated judo, wrestling, and jiu jitsu backgrounds make for a very proming mix in the light heavyweight division. Cirkunov is a special athlete who's blessed with tremendous speed, power and natural raw talent. There are issues in his game, and he will need to continue focusing on his striking and cardio. The Xtreme Couture product has always been praised for his incredible work ethic, and given his vast talents, team and hard working nature; the twenty four year old Cirkunov has all of the tools he needs to be an impact light heavyweight at the highest level of the sport.

New Mexico's Abel Cullum has fought very actively early in his career. He's compiled an 18-3 record in his five years as a pro and is still just twenty three years of age. The reigning King of the Cage Flyweight (135 pound) Champion, Cullum has flip flopped between the bantamweight and featherweight divisions in recent years, competing in Dream's Featherweight Grand Prix in 2009. Cullum is an aggressive submission grappler who will need to continue developing his standup game. Currently one of the top bantamweight prospects not fighting in the WEC, Cullum shows the talent and has the age to develop into a permanent fixture in the bantamweight division.

As a sport, Mixed Martial Arts has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. And while it has continued to expand, the structure, framework, rules and regulations that characterize and govern the sport are still developing.
We at MMARanked.com abide by a criteria when deciding who is (and who isn’t) considered a “prospect”. At this point while there are certain subjective measures in place, much of our evaluation process involves an objective outlook also.
That criteria is continuously under review and we are always looking to better our process. The list we’ve constructed is based on fighters who’ve fallen under the prospect banner according to our criteria.
While still developing, we feel that it’s imperative MMA be covered in as similar a fashion as possible to traditional sports. Every major sport has multiple publications and a foundation for judging the young talent for their respective sports. We are trying to help build that structure in MMA.
Feedback is both welcomed and appreciated.
