Chad Mendes
If anyone has the skill-set and style to beat Jose Aldo it might very well be Chad Mendes. A member of Team Alfa Male, Mendes trains with the likes of Urija Faber, Joseph Benavidez and Danny Castillo. Currently undefeated in his MMA career, Chad Mendes holds a professional record of 11-0-0.
Primarily a wrestler with extreme speed and power, Mendes is able to close the distance quickly and completes about 75% of his takedown attempts. This will truly be a key to victory for Mendes as he will be giving up four inches in reach to Jose Aldo who is a superior striker to begin with.
Once on the ground Mendes has been able to control past opponents with ease. History would demonstrate that he will have an advantage there. Something he may wish to improve upon however, is the amount of damage he inflicts while maintaining top position. Getting Aldo to the ground is no easy task so it will be imperative for Mendes to impose aggression while in an advantages position.
Though this will be his first five round fight, Chad Mendes has shown in the past to have remarkable conditioning. Seven of his eleven wins have come by way of decision indicating his ability to go the distance. This may be a factor as Jose Aldo at times has shown signs of fatigue in later rounds. Taking this fight into deep waters may be good strategy for Mendes but leaving it in the hands of the judges is not.
Obviously anything can happen inside the cage but I’d look for Mendes to try and grind out a decision victory, improving his record to 12-0-0 and making him the new UFC Featherweight Champion.
Jose Aldo
Jose Aldo is widely considered to one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in all of MMA. He currently holds a record of 20-1-0 and is the UFC Featherweight Champion. A member of Team Black House, Aldo trains with some of the very best this sport has to offer, most notably Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and the Nogueira brothers.
Throughout his career Aldo has become known primarily for his striking. While able to dismantle opponents with lethal punches, kicks and knees, it is his ability to avoid taking damage in the process that truly allows him to impose his will.
In past fights he has displayed superb takedown defense which will be crucial against Chad Mendes, but should the fight indeed go to the ground Aldo has shown that keeping him there is another issue all together. The fact that he is a decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt only adds to the equation as keeping the fight on the ground will more than likely be the strategy of Mendes.
In this fight I’d look for Jose Aldo to do more of the same and use his reach advantage to keep Mendes on the outside while picking him apart with punches, kicks and knees. Though many believe he has an issue with conditioning, at the end of the day Aldo always seems to get the job done. There is no reason for him to believe any differently with Chad Mendes.
